Microsoft’s Kinect is a new video game technology that enables users to engage in a controller free gaming and entertainment experience. Kinect is for Microsoft’s XBOX 360 gaming system, and with it people can use physical gestures to control what goes on in the actual video game. Instead of using a traditional controller, all you need is your arms and legs. This NPR piece does a great job of explaining this new technology. I like how the people in this piece are actually using Kinect and I felt as though I was right there while they were playing. Kinect utilizes a camera with a sensor to detect your physical motions, the sensor recognizes your gestures and your avatar in the game virtually performs your gestures. The technology is very interesting and this piece effectively illustrates how to use the technology. You can also use spoken commands to control Kinect, which is highlighted in the piece. I like the natural sound of the people using Kinect, particularly when they were playing the exercise game.
